I watched the opera Carmen yesterday on the outdoor stage at Nodeul Island.
As the opera began, familiar melodies filled the air, and reading the lyrics on the screen while listening to the music made it feel fresh and new.
Carmen tells the story of a captivating gypsy woman named Carmen and a soldier who falls for her. The characters’ traits were vividly expressed not only through the musical melodies but also in the lyrics, making it feel as though it was a true story brought to life as an opera. After the performance, I discovered that the opera was an adaptation of a novel by the French writer Prosper Mérimée, brought to life by Georges Bizet. It was truly a moving masterpiece.
The performance was made even more enjoyable by not just the lead roles’ singing but also the vibrant choreography of the ensemble and the accompaniment of the orchestra, creating a richer, more impressive stage.
